the American dream

i just finished a loan application for a mortgage. that was mind-numbing.

my back hurts from sitting hunched over the desk, my eyes hurt from making faces at the piece of paper because the questions are like trying to answer questions on the SATs or the ACT in high school, and my fingers hurt from gripping the pen so hard with my hand because i got so frustrated WITH THE STUPID QUESTIONS.

isn't the American dream wonderful? the perfect car, the perfect house, the perfect neighborhood, the perfect daycare (or private school), the perfect clothes, even the perfect cell phone.

we want it all. and we want it all now. no waiting. no saving up to buy that great new pair of shoes. we just go out and buy them. and whenever a birthday or Christmas comes around, and we are asked what we want.... we don't know.

because we have already bought ourselves everything.

even things that use to be free now cost money - or we have made it that way. want to lose weight? go on a diet. that should theoretically be cheaper because you should be buying fewer groceries. or maybe the same because you should be buying less groceries as a whole but more nutritious foods which are usually more expensive.

but no. now there is jenny craig and weight watchers. and if you don't want to pay for someone to tell you what to eat, just go buy some zantrex 3 or some cortislim (you know, for that stubborn belly fat).

*sigh*

why can't we (and by we i mean me) be happy with simpler things? why couldn't i see fit to keep my dinky cell phone instead of having to have a slvr? why can't i be happy with the clothes that i own (because i own A LOT OF CLOTHES) instead of having to have something new from lane bryant? do i really have to buy another thing of eyeshadow, or lipstick every time i walk into wal-mart?

*sigh*

so. will it be that we won't be able to buy the house of our dreams because we have not been able to deter gratification for the small things in lieu of something much grander and more wonderful? because we had to have those miniscule (in the grand scheme of things) things that we randomly walked by in the mall?

i guess only time will tell.

xoxo
